What Is Trouser Break?
The trouser break is the fold or crease that forms at the front of the trouser leg where it meets the top of the shoe. The amount of break is determined by the hem length: a shorter hem creates less break; a longer hem creates more.
No Break
No break means the trouser hem sits at or slightly above the top of the shoe, creating a clean, unbroken line from knee to shoe. It reads contemporary and precise. It works best with a narrower trouser cut and shoes without a significant tongue. It is the choice of the man who knows exactly what he wants and has no interest in ambiguity.
Quarter Break and Half Break
A quarter break creates a slight fold at the front of the hem — barely visible in motion. Half break creates a clear fold that covers the top of the shoe lace. These are the classical standards for most tailored trousers, and they work across a range of trouser widths and shoe styles.
Full Break
Full break means the trouser hem falls deeply onto the shoe, creating a pronounced fold. It is the traditional choice for formal British tailoring — generous, unhurried, authoritative. It requires a wider trouser to avoid looking overlong, and it works best with a heavier shoe that anchors the hem.
Choosing Your Break
The correct break depends on the trouser's intended purpose, its cut, and the shoes it will be worn with. A tailored bespoke trouser allows the client to specify the break precisely, in the context of the shoe that will be worn with it. This is one of the reasons that shoe and trouser should be considered together when commissioning.
